P K Sinha Centre for Bio Energy

Introduction In house facilities Research interest Academic Students

IIT Kharagpur has set up P.K. Sinha Centre for BioEnergy in 2009 through a seed-funding of Rs. 10 crore (2 million US$) from one its alumnus, Dr. Prabhakant Sinha, Founder and Co-Chairman of ZS Associates. This multidisciplinary centre comprises of faculty and scientists from IIT-KGP existing departments such as Agriculture & Food Engineering, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology & Geophysics, Intellectual Property Law School, Mechanical Engineering and Physics.

This centre is a melting point for students and researchers from a wide range of subjects to collaboratively work and find a solution to a common problem of deriving energy from renewable resources. Even nationally relevant problems and issues can be solved easily through an inter-disciplinary approach.

This Center aims to engage with the best in class bioenergy research institutes of the world to promote cutting-edge collaborative research on India-specific issues, as well as bring world opinion leaders together for knowledge dissemination.

Biofuels are gaining an impetus to address the rampant issue of energy demand in an eco-friendly and cost effective manner. P K Sinha Centre for Bio Energy is an endeavour to bring the transformations, by involving biological components. To promote an environmentally sustainable and economically viable Bio Energy model in India that serves its national interest and would help establishing the country as a global hub for bio energy, the Centre has aimed to work in the area of Bioethanol, biobutanol, biohydrogen, MFC and algal biodiesel.
