SHORT-TERM COURSE On Stability and Design of Underground Access and Mine Excavation
December 01-03, 2015
Organised by DEPARTMENT OF MINING ENGINEERING
INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY KHARAGPUR
KHARAGPUR - 721 302 (W.B.), INDIA
ABOUT THE COURSE
Mining excavation is a continious process which requires the removal of lakhs of cubic meter of fragmented rock per year. The removal of fragmented rock are for the development of underground facilities like underground access (shaft, incline, decline, adit), galleries, pillars and others with an intention to achieve 100% extraction of economic minerals with safety. It also incorporates the decision on size, shape, location and orientation of such facilities at planning stage. These decisions are highly dependent on the intensity of stresses (local and regional) and rock mass quality.
This course is developed for a practicing Engineer/ Planner to make them understand the causes of underground failures and their remedies. These procedure are evolved and practiced in the department over the years to solve the industrial problems.
In short, stability depends on the rock mass property, size & sequence of excavation, stresses and the failure behavior of rock. This course starts with the fundamentals and focuses on their applications in mining practices. At the end of the course, participants will be able to understand the causes of such failure and their remedial measures.
COURSE CONTENT
The course will cover the multiple case studies on the following broad areas:
- Underground Access
- Underground Excavation in in Soft and Hard Rock Mining
- Subsidence: Prediction and Control
- Natural and Artifical Support System
- Mine Instrumentation
- Numerical Modeling Fundamentals
- Hands-on-Experience on Laboratory Testing of Rock
- Panel Discussion on real-life problems presented by participants
- Interested participants can contribute to this discussion by providing the history of underground stability problems and/or mitigation measures in their organisation by sharing information by small powerpoint presentation and/ or small writeup with coordinator in advance so that necessary arrangement can be made for panel discussion. Documents accepted on time may be included into the course material.
Each topic will be illustrated by case study examples from Indian mining industry. The lectures will be delivered by faculty members of the Department of Mining Engineering, IIT Kharagpur.
